About the Allen Institute for AI (AI2)

This website belongs to the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI2. AI2 is a research institute that does not work for profit. Its main goal is to do important research in artificial intelligence. They want to make AI better for everyone and solve big problems. The institute was started by Paul Allen, who also co founded Microsoft. AI2 works to push the limits of what AI can do to help humanity.

Key AI Research Areas

AI2 scientists work on many parts of artificial intelligence. They study how computers can understand human language, which is called Natural Language Processing. They also work on computer vision, helping computers "see" and understand pictures and videos. Another big area is using AI for science, like helping scientists discover new things. They create new AI models and ways to teach computers. Examples of their work include systems that can answer questions or summarize academic papers. They aim to make AI more capable and useful.

Open Tools and Resources for All

A special part of AI2 is sharing its work with others. They make many of their tools, models, and datasets free for public use. This helps students, researchers, and companies build their own AI projects without starting from scratch. One well known project is Semantic Scholar, a free search engine for scientific papers. It uses AI to help people find and understand research faster. They also release large language models, like OLMo, for the public. Sharing these things helps the whole AI community grow and learn.

Making AI for Good

AI2 believes artificial intelligence should help people and society. Their research tries to make AI more fair, understandable, and helpful. They want to make sure AI benefits everyone, not just a few. By doing open research and sharing tools, they help more people learn about AI and contribute to its future. Their work helps push the limits of what AI can do today and in the future, aiming for positive impacts across different fields and communities. They are a key place for new ideas in artificial intelligence.
